Resident Program Preparation
The following information provides some general information on planning for your student's or classroom's visit. Detailed information is available in our downloadable Program Planning Guide.
Preparation: Pre-site Classroom Visits and Parent Meetings
Shortly before a school group is scheduled to visit the CVEEC, staff members from the Center will visit the school to meet with students and teachers and help get students excited about their upcoming experience. These “pre-site” visits are scheduled 1-3 weeks prior to the school’s visit, and last about 1-1.5 hours.
Parents have the opportunity to engage in a pre-trip orientation program presented by EEC staff. Teachers will notify parents of the date for the meeting, which may be scheduled one week to several months before the EEC experience. This program is a great opportunity to ask questions and find out firsthand what to expect during the student's visit.
What to Bring
Our residential program focuses on the outdoors as a classroom environment. Students may spend several hours outdoors each day, regardless of weather conditions, and it is important that students are prepared with appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear for weather conditions during their stay. Closed-toe shoes are required at all times.
Our modern-style dorms are heated, cooled, and equiped with modern bathroom and shower facilities. Guests bring their own sleeping bag or bed linens, a pillow, and personal toiletry items. Because of our program focus and intent, students may not bring cell phones, laptops, personal music or video game devices, or any other electronic devices. See a list of recommended items to pack.
Adult-to-Student Ratios
CVEEC maintains small class sizes to allow for personalized attention to student learning. Two adults, consisting of one CVEEC staff and one school teacher/official or parent chaperone, help us provide a typical ratio of 1 adult: 7 children. School teachers/officials and parent chaperones spend the night at CVEEC with their trail groups and are provided room and board in exchange.
Expectations for Student Behavior
CVEEC is inclusive and respectful in its approach to teaching and welcomes a diverse student body. Students sign a statement asserting that they will abide by CVEEC rules that reflect our philosophy of respect for nature, oneself and others.
