The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park is partnering with the Akron Symphony to offer the first Summer Music Camp for middle and high school age musicians at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center.

“The Summer Music Camp with the Akron Symphony adds to an already stellar list of summer camp options,” said Deb Yandala, CEO of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. “This partnership provides a tremendous opportunity for young musicians to challenge themselves by learning from professionals in a fun environment.”

Campers will participate in interactive workshops, group rehearsals and daily coaching in an intense week-long experience learning about various music styles while developing their musical skills. Summer Music Camp faculty is comprised of professional musicians from the Akron Symphony Orchestra, including Maestro Eric Benjamin and Akron Symphony violinist Cory Smith.

Campers will also participate in recreational and educational activities exploring the natural world and beautiful surroundings of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Other camps offered this summer by the Conservancy include: Theatre Camp with Magical Theatre Company; Survivor Camp, which will culminate in a night spent camping underneath the stars; and Chef Camp, where children will have fun learning how to cook using local and sustainable foods. Also, Farm Camp will offer campers the opportunity to dig in the dirt, investigate where their food comes from, care for farm animals and participate in a Farmer’s Market. Residential camps begin Sunday afternoon and end early evening on Friday.

Junior Ranger Day Camp will give children the experience of learning about their national park and personal growth, while offering a fun setting. Campers will spend their days outdoors exploring the magic and beauty of the forests, streams, meadows and trails within Cuyahoga Valley National Park while earning their Junior Ranger badges. Day camp is available July 18-22 and July 24-29 for children ages 6 to 11.

In honoring the Conservancy, the GCA recognized depth of programming and fundraising, calling the Conservancy a “high-performance volunteer association that is a full-fledged partner” with the National Park Service. In addition, the GCA acknowledged the Conservancy’s commitment to innovative environmental education and its dedication to preserving the natural world for future generations. The Akron Garden Club, member of the GCA, nominated the Conservancy for the Margaret Douglas Medal. (www.akrongardenclub.org)

The GCA particularly cited the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center, the premier program managed by the Conservancy. The center draws up to 10,000 children annually to its innovative year-round school and summer camp programs that focus largely on the Cuyahoga Valley watershed. The center’s 500-acre campus is home to trails, ponds, forests and meadows, two dormitories, a dining hall, labs, an art room and a library. An award-winning interdisciplinary curriculum incorporates current academic content standards in math, social studies, language arts and technology. Some $137,000 in scholarships is provided annually to students in need.

“It’s an honor and pleasure to accept this award on behalf of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park,” said Deb Yandala, CEO of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. “Our long-standing partnership with the National Park Service and exceptional volunteers, dedicated members and generous donors have been a driving force in our success – particularly in the development and growth of our programming and curriculum for the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center. We appreciate our partnership with local garden clubs like the Akron Garden Club and again thank the GCA for this prestigious award!”

The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a friends group dedicated to supporting Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the tenth-most-visited national park, which extends 33,000 acres along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River between Akron and Cleveland. In 1974, with the help of John F. Seiberling (the GCA 1988 Frances K. Hutchinson Medal recipient), the U.S. Congress created the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, and in 2002 – by another act of Congress – it became a national park. (www.conservancyforcvnp.org)

The Conservancy has approximately 2,700 members and oversees more than 4,000 volunteers, community supporters and advocates who provide more than 140,000 hours of volunteer support. The Conservancy sponsors a wide-array of concerts, art exhibitions, festivals, lectures and dinners each year; handles park rentals; and manages a campground. To accomplish this, the Conservancy raises $1 million annually in philanthropic grants and donations, organizes annual fundraisers, promotes membership and operates two retail stores. The Conservancy is currently spearheading a $10-million endowment campaign to ensure the future and legacy of the park and its trails, called Trails Forever.

The Margaret Douglas Medal originally was presented and endowed by Mrs. Robert D. Sterling, Garden Club of Dublin and Monadnock Garden Club (New Hampshire) to honor Mrs. Walter Douglas, an honorary GCA member. Art deco sculptor Rene P. Chambellan designed the medal in 1952. Previous winners include author and environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1990), documentary filmmaker Bill Kurtis (1997) and horticultural consultant and educator Katy Moss Warner (2002).

Two other Margaret Douglas medalists have been from Akron – Wendell LaDue in 1983 and PPG Industries Inc. in 2001, both nominated by The Akron Garden Club. LaDue was honored for his contributions to environmental protection and maintenance of quality of life through nationally recognized work in the field of water conservation and supply. PPG Industries was recognized for creating a model natural wildlife habitat by reclaiming 300 acres made barren by 84 years of synthetic soda ash production.

The GCA is a nonprofit national organization composed of 199 clubs with more than 17,500 members who devote their energy and expertise to projects in their communities and across the nation. Founded in 1913, the GCA is a leader in horticulture, conservation and civic improvement. Each year, the GCA gives national awards to recognize the outstanding achievement of conservationists, educators, environmentalists, flower arrangers, horticulturists, landscape designers and writers who have made significant contributions to their fields. (www.gcamerica.org)

A former Artist in Residence for the Banff Centre for the Arts, she is preparing for her next gallery exhibition in Peninsula, Ohio.

The exhibition entitled “Natural Distinction,” will open from 1 – 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 22 and run through July 8 at the John F. Seiberling Gallery, located at 1403 W. Hines Hill Rd., within the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park offices in Peninsula.

“As a child I learned that nature is an everlasting surprise,” Doss explained. “Hours spent in gardens, woods, and streams during every season captivated me, and my love of art and nature grew. This exhibit features bold, simplistic nature-inspired paintings on blocks of wood brought to life with vibrant colors.”

Doss earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has been a recent featured artist at the University of Akron, and her work was chosen to set the stage for the 2010 Bioneers conference at the metro Tri-C campus.

Her Natural Distinction exhibit captures the beauty of nature with its bright colors, on a natural and unconventional canvas of wood.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Weekend viewings can be set up by appointment.

Through a strategic partnership with the National Park Service (NPS) and the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, historic Stanford House – an 1830s farm house – is coming to life in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

“Visitors already enjoy Cuyahoga Valley National Park for its amazing trails, scenic views, historic areas, family events, educational programs, scenic railroad and so much more when they visit,” said Stan Austin, park superintendent for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. “Now they’ll be able to spend a full day exploring the national park, and have another opportunity to spend the night right in the heart of our national park at Stanford House!”

Stanford House is one of a handful of facilities within an eastern national park to have in-park lodging. The building includes nine rooms that can sleep 29 individuals, with exclusive whole house booking for large groups, or individual room booking starting at $50 per night with a continental breakfast included.

“The possibilities for Stanford House are endless,” continued Austin. “Our vision is to have this great resource inside our national park be a catalyst to enhance local visitor experiences and increase tourism in Northeast Ohio during the next five to 10 years. We have a treasure here in our region, and we need to give people every reason to experience it.”

Beyond individual and exclusive group use of the entire building, Stanford House will also be used for education programs in conjunction with Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center.

“Stanford House will allow us to serve more people with educational programs,” said Deb Yandala, CEO of the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. “It will help us better serve small school groups, and in the future we plan to offer other new and innovative programs for children of all ages, as well as families and adults.”

Stanford House rehabilitation began in 2010 and was recently finished in March. Funding was attained from private and foundation donors and grants and was executed in cooperation with the NPS.

Renovation of the house included a focus on preserving its historic elements, while incorporating environmentally sound features. The furniture was custom made using recycled wood, and the counters were fabricated using pressed recycled paper.

The exhibition entitled “EARTH & SKY,” will open from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on March 18 and run through May 14, 2011, at the John F. Seiberling Gallery, located at 1403 W. Hines Hill Rd., within the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park offices in Peninsula, Ohio.

“I’m in love with every aspect of bringing art into life,” Drozda expressed. “As a young girl, I carried the dream of being an artist and ornithologist. My new exhibit EARTH & SKY brings these two timeless passions together. The exhibit will feature a rich blend of colors and textures that reveal the beauty and magnificence of a wide array of birds I’ve observed in the Chesapeake Bay area where I have lived for the past 10 years.”

Although Drozda has spent the last decade designing and facilitating studios for children and adults at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, she spent the greater part of her career in the Cleveland area as an entrepreneur.

She was the owner of Signet Gallery in the Murray Hill Arts District, in which she was a charter member. She also held open studios and monthly creativity salons for groups at her top-floor art studio within The Fairhill Institute for the Elderly (formerly the Fairhill Psychiatric Hospital) during the 90s as Artist in Residence for the Center for Therapy Through the Arts art studio.

“One of the reasons I began using expressive art as a form of painting is because of an experience I had when I was younger,” Drozda added. “I survived a horrible violent crime, and because of that I’ve worked to give women a voice through my artwork, and to take a leadership role in the evolution of a healed global civilization. I find expressive art to allow me to reveal my compassion and care for all living beings, and you’ll find that quite apparent in my new exhibit.”

The Mother & Daughter Garden Party Overnight and the Stone Soup Mystery Meal are being presented to the general public as a taste of the educational farming experiences of Farm Camp and Farm School that have been developed by the collaborators of the Farm School Initiative. The family programs, offered in September, will promote the Farm School Initiative goals of increasing sustainable farming practices and careers, as well as encouraging school-aged children and the general public to eat local foods.

The Mother & Daughter Garden Party Overnight will be hosted at the newly remodeled historic Stanford House from Friday, September 9 at 6:30 p.m. to Saturday, September 10 at 4 p.m. Participants will construct sustainable-method container gardens to take home, and then relax around a campfire with a cup of cocoa. In the morning, the party will continue on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad en route to the Howe Meadow Farmers’ Market to shop for a picnic lunch and to meet local farmers. After a short hike to Hale Farm & Village, the group will picnic in the historic Goldsmith Garden and tour the Great Lakes Brewery Pint-Sized Garden. The party will then make a return trip to the Stanford House on the train.

The Mother & Daughter Garden Party Overnight fee: $150 per female adult/child pair, $120 for members of Countryside Conservancy, Western Reserve Historical Society, and Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Additional child: $40, $30 partnering members. Price includes a hearty evening snack, breakfast, lunch, admission, and market tokens. Arrival and Registration will be at the Stanford House beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with a Meet and Greet at 6:30 p.m. Departure will be on Saturday by 4 p.m. For more information and to register by Friday, September 2, call Connie at 330-657-2796 ext. 100.

The Stone Soup Mystery Meal will start out at the Countryside Farmers’ Market and continue at Hale Farm & Village from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 24. Families will take part in a guided tour of the market and personal introductions to local farmers. Then groups will set out to purchase fresh produce and other local products to create a mystery meal. Participants will then hike the short trail from Indigo Lake to Hale Farm & Village, where the group will prepare a mystery soup over a campfire and assemble delicious salads. While the soup finishes, the children will re-enact the traditional tale of Stone Soup. The mystery meal will be served fireside, while participants try to guess the mystery ingredients.

The Stone Soup Mystery Meal fee: $17 adults, $15 for members of Countryside Conservancy, Western Reserve Historical Society, and Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and $7 children ages 5 - 11. Price includes market tokens. Howe Meadow, 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Be prepared for the weather and for walking. Farmers’ Market purchases will be shuttled to Hale Farm & Village so as to not burden participants on their hike. For more information and to register by September 16, call Connie at 330-657-2796 ext. 100.

Both events complement Farm Camp, a farm-to-fork program operated by the Farm School Initiative, and Farm School, a sustainable farming and garden design program. Both programs focus on concepts of sustainability, stewardship, agricultural ecology, place, change over time, entrepreneurship, and gastronomy.

The Farm School Initiative has brought together farmers, students, educators, rangers, business managers and museum curators from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio, Akron Public Schools, Heritage Farms, Brunty Farms, Greenfield Berry Farm, Great Lakes Brewery Pint Size Farm, Hale Farm & Village, Countryside Conservancy and the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Financial support has been generously provided by the GAR Foundation, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, OMNOVA Solutions Foundation, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio, and WITAN (Women In Touch with Akron’s Needs).

Viewers of his exhibit will certainly connect with the artists roots.

The exhibition entitled "Natural Elements" will open from 2 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 11 and run through Friday, November 4 at the John F. Seiberling Gallery. The gallery is located at 1403 West Hines Hill Road, within the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park offices in Peninsula. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Tunstall sought a different path for his work to honor a personal hero John F. Seiberling. "I wanted to honor the legacy of Congressman Seiberling by looking at my past images of the natural world," Tunstall said. "He is probably the main reasons this beautiful park even exists."

Tunstall earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Akron in 1985 before entering graduate school at Ohio University where he received his Master of Fine Arts in photography in 1991.

Tunstall uses traditional medium format cameras and occasionally an old black plastic camera produced in the 1960s with only minimal control. His photos, which often seem be taken several decades ago, are printed to give a timeless portrayal.

However, this is a reality for many Northeast Ohio children, which is why local non-profit Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park works to give local kids these experiences.

The Conservancy’s 11th Annual Clambake Fundraising Event directly supports scholarships for children in need, allowing them to attend the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center. With the funds raised, local children take part in a four-day residential camp program— taking them from the city lights to the sights and sounds of the national park.

The Clambake will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (CVEEC). The CVEEC is located at 2796 Oak Hill Road in Peninsula. Advance registration to reserve your spot is required and ends on Sept. 9. People interested in attending or sponsoring the event can visit www.conservancycvnp.org or call 330-657-2909 ext. 222.

The evening consists of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, full clam and lobster bake, musical entertainment, live auction and a raffle. Money raised at the event offsets the cost needed per child to attend the CVEEC residential program. The 2010 Clambake raised roughly $50,000, allowing 160 children to encounter the surroundings of our 33,000 acre national park. The Conservancy staff is working hard to make sure this year’s Clambake makes an even larger impact on children in Northeast Ohio.

“It’s amazing how the students respond when they are exposed to the natural world for the first time! You really see a difference by the time they leave, now armed with the knowledge and appreciation of the environment and how they can personally make a positive impact on nature,” said Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park CEO Deb Yandala. “The Clambake is a truly special event because it goes a long way in helping the Environmental Education Center influence a new generation.”

But what if you could experience the beauty of nature while getting in a work-out? The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park has a way for people in Northeast Ohio to accomplish both on a weekly basis this October with its Fall Running Series.

The Conservancy’s Fall Running Series allows participants to experience the colorful fall landscape of Cuyahoga Valley National Park each week. Timed races will occur each Tuesday with non-competitive runs being held the following Wednesday. A “Full Moon Run” will also be held on Friday, October 14.

The Fall Running Series will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4 at the Virginia Kendall Ledges Shelter. The shelter is located at 701 Truxell Road in Peninsula.

“We started out with a small group of runners. People keep telling their friends about how much they enjoy this event, and it has continued to grow each year,” said Fall Running Series founder and Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park Finance Committee Chairman Guy Gadomski. “People have really responded to the Fall Running Series because it offers something completely different from other running events— a chance to compete with others in a unique set of races while being surrounded by the amazing fall backdrop of a national park.”
