The History . . .
Throughout history, the building has almost exclusively functioned as a “store” filling a need in the community for a retail center as well as a social gathering place. The circa 1900, one story, gable-front building is one of two commercial buildings left in the village. In addition to functioning as a retail center in the first part of the century, the building also served as a church, union hall, post office and reputedly the silent picture theatre for the village of Boston.

By 1945, Rollin and Mary Boodey were running the Square Deal Food Store and the building was known as the Boston Community Store or just simply “Boodey’s.” The Boodeys operated the store for the next 25 years until its closing in 1970. The National Park Service purchased a “life estate” on the property in the 1980’s. In 1997, the Boody family reopened the store as Grandma’s Watering Hole and then as Lock 32 Museum.

In a unique partnership between the National Park Service, First Energy Corporation, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association, a land swap was coordinated and Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association became the owner of the property. On July 1, 2007, the store reopened its doors as Trail Mix, once again offering the community a retail center and gathering place.
